STALLION GRADING

 

BENEFITS OF STALLION GRADING

 1)   Stallions recognised by mare owners as being of a high standard and free from hereditary diseases and defects.

2)   Recognition with The World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses.

3)   Graded Stallions currently registered for the year of covering are eligible to accept Service Vouchers valued at £500, £200 and £100 awarded by this Society to Brood Mares.

4)   Promotion of all Graded Stallions via membership, National & International advertising, website and Society’s Trade Stand which attends major shows and events around the country.

5)   Accurate covering, foaling and fertility records maintained.

6)   Eligible to compete for the Society’s trophies.

7)   Eligible to compete as an entire under BSJA Rules.

8)   Stock eligible for SHB(GB) Stud Book papers.

 

 

ELITE STALLIONS

 Stallions will be granted the title ELITE if either they or their progeny fulfil the following criteria:

DRESSAGE - Placed at a CDI*** competition at Intermediare I/II or Grand Prix

EVENTING - Completed a CCI**** or placed in top twelve of a CCI*** event

SHOW JUMPING - Placed in Grand Prix at SI or CSIO Competition and/or competed on a Nations Cup Team

RACING - Have a BHB Timeform rating of a minimum of 110 on the Flat or a minimum of 145 National Hunt.

 

 

GENERAL RULES APPLYING TO ALL STALLIONS

 The Inspectors reserve the right to have any stallion examined by the veterinary surgeon present at the Grading. These examinations may require the stallion to be endoscoped, blood tested and/or X-rayed.

 ALL STALLIONS MUST:

1)   Be 153cm (15.0h) or above.

2)   Be 3 years old or over.

3)   Stallions applying for Grading must have a minimum of 3 generations of proven pedigree.

4)   Sign a declaration stating that they agree to abide by the Levy Board codes of practice for the prevention of veneral diseases, forward copies of C.E.M swab certificate and provide a negative blood test result for E.V.A or a copy of an Artervac vaccination record.

5)   Submit a sample for a DNA test for which the owner is liable for the cost when passing the initial Grading or supply details of where DNA profile is held.

6)   Be owned by a current member of SHB(GB).

7)   Submit a 5 stage Veterinary Certificate carried out by a recognised specialist equine veterinary surgeon issued no more than 3 months prior to closing date of entries.

 

1.      PURE BRED STALLIONS GRADED OR REGISTERED WITH RECOGNISED BRITISH INDIGENOUS BREED SOCIETIES

 Stallions in this category (e.g. Irish Draught, Cleveland Bays, etc.) can only apply to come forward to an SHB(GB) Stallion Grading with the consent of their breed society.

 Stallions will be assessed on conformation, movement in hand and loose jumping, and be shown under saddle at walk, trot & canter. They may be jumped under saddle at the option of the owner.

 
 

2.   THOROUGHBREDSTALLIONS

 Thoroughbred Stallions with a minimum timeform rating of 100 on the Flat or a National Hunt BHB Official Handicap rating of 120 or above, may apply for Grading via an alternative system. For full details please contact the office.

 Thoroughbred Stallions that have not raced or have a lower timeform rating may come forward to the Stallion Grading for assessment.

 They will be assessed on their conformation, movement in hand and loose but they will not be required to be seen under saddle or to loose jump.

 

3.         FOREIGNGRADEDSTALLIONS

 Stallions that are fully graded with any foreign society that is a full member of the WBFSH AND that have a performance test result of 100 or higher, or B.H.B. Official Handicap rating on the Flat of 80 or more, or equivalent, or a National Hunt B.H.B. Official Handicap rating of 100 or higher, can apply to be accepted as SHB(GB) Graded Stallions. Proof of graded status, together with proof of vetting at time of grading must be submitted with a completed application form & the relevant fee. Please contact the office for an application form. 

These rules also include stallions graded with daughter societies in the UK.

 N.B. Progeny foaled in the UK out of an SHB(GB) Graded Mare sired by a stallion standing abroad that fulfills the SHB(GB) criteria for a Foreign Graded Stallion will be eligible for registration in the SHB(GB) Full Stud Book, so long as a DNA profile is available for the sire to allow for parentage verification of the offspring.

 

4.         STALLIONS GRADEDINTHEUKBYOTHERSPORTHORSE/

            WARMBLOODSOCIETIES THATAREFULLMEMBERSOF

            THEWBFSH

 Stallions that have attained the highest level of Approval/Grading within their Stud Book and have attained points or money at a minimum of Intermediate Eventing, Grade B Showjumping or Medium Dressage, or a B.H.B. Official Handicap rating on the Flat of 80 or more or equivalent, or a National Hunt B.H.B. Official Handicap rating of 100 or higher, or have progeny that have achieved the same level, can apply to be accepted as SHB(GB) Graded Stallions. Proof of graded status, together with proof of vetting at time of grading must be submitted with a completed application form & the relevant fee. Please contact the office for an application form.

 Stallions Approved/Graded at lower levels or that do not have the required level of performance or that are approved with societies which are not full members of the WBFSH will have to come forward for SHB(GB) Grading at the level appropriate to their age.

 

5.         OTHERSTALLIONS BETWEENTHEAGESOFTHREEAND

            SIXYEARSENTERINGTHEGRADINGSYSTEM

 The Grading is a two-stage assessment but at either stage of the assessment the judges can reject the horse if it does not reach the required standard. Stallions must complete both stages of the assessment to become Life Approved.

 STAGEONE

The stallions will be assessed on conformation, movement in hand and loose and loose jumping and be shown under saddle at walk, trot and canter. They may be jumped under saddle at the option of the owner. Horses wishing to register with the BSJA must be jumped under saddle.

 STAGETWO

The stallions will be required to return with a second five-stage Veterinary Certificate to undergo a further assessment. Horses that come forward initially at three years old must return at five, those coming forward for the first time at four, five and six must return the following year.

 

6.         SEVENYEAROLDSTALLIONSANDOLDERNOTCOVERED  

            BY ANYOFTHEABOVECRITERIA

 Before being allowed to come forward for Grading, these stallions will be required to provide proof of:

A)   Successful competition record at Intermediate Eventing, Grade B Showjumping or Medium Level Desssage OR

B)         A B.H.B. Official Handicap Rating on the Flat of 80 or higher, or a National Hunt B.H.B. Official Handicap Rating of 100 or higher OR

C)        Have run 15 or more times on the racecourse OR

D)        Have sired stock competing at the same level

N.B. Stallions who do not meet the above criteria may apply to come forward for Grading and each case will be assessed on its merit.

The stallions will be assessed on conformation, movement in hand and loose and loose jumping and be shown under saddle at walk, trot and canter. They may be jumped under saddle at the option of the owner. Horses wishing to register with the BSJA must be jumped under saddle.

 

The Stallion Committee reserves the right to alter or amend these rules and regulations from time to time as they see fit. The Stallion Committee also reserves the right to assess individual cases on their merit and in exceptional circumstances certain dispensations may be granted.

 

 

 

NEW B.S.J.A ASSESSMENT

A preliminary inspection is available for 3 & 4 year old horses whose owners wish to compete under BSJA rules.

Such inspections will incorporate a conformation and movement assessment together with loose jumping. There will not be a ridden assessment.

The entry fee is £150 + VAT (£176.25) and stallion owners must be members of SHB(GB) which costs £50. A veterinary certificate will not be required at this stage. No covering certificates will be issued for these stallions and they will not be promoted by the Society.

To be registered as a breeding stallion with SHB(GB), stallions will have to pass a full grading and at that stage, a 5 stage veterinary certificate will be required and payment of the full grading fee.

 

 

 

THOROUGHBRED STALLIONS

 

STALLIONS MUST:

1.  Be 153cm (15.0h) or over.

2.  Be 3 years old or over at the time of application.

3.  Have a B.H.B. Timeform rating of a minimum of 100 on the Flat or a National Hunt B.H.B. Official Handicap rating of 120 or higher.

4.  Be owned by a current member of SHB(GB) or in the case of multiple ownership at least one nominated person must be a member.

5.  Submit a 2 stage Veterinary Certificate carried out by a recognised specialist equine veterinary surgeon issued no more than 3 months prior to application for SHB(GB) approval.

6.  Submit a sample for DNA test for which the owner is liable for the cost, or supply a DNA profile carried out by a recognised laboratory.

7.  Be assessed for conformation by SHB(GB) officials.

 

OWNERS MUST:

8.  Sign a declaration stating that they agree to abide by the Levy Board codes of practice for the prevention of venereal diseases, forward copies of C.E.M. swab certificate and provide a negative blood test results for E.V.A. or a copy of an Artervac vaccination record.

 

FEES

£150.00 plus VAT (£176.25) is payable to include inspection and the first year’s covering book. In future years an annual payment of £70.00 plus VAT (£82.25) will be charged for a covering book and to cover all promotional activities carried out by SHB(GB) (see Benefits).

 Completed covering books must be returned to SHB(GB) by 1st October each year.

 

 

The Stallion Committee reserves the right to alter or amend these rules and regulations from time to time as they see fit. The Stallion Committee also reserves the right to assess individual cases on their merit and in exceptional circumstances certain dispensations may be granted.
