The 2021 Show, a winning formula

Ongoing uncertainty with venues saw a move to the David Broome Centre, also known as Wales and the West, and Cricklands; take your pick! It proved to be an easy venue to travel to, being close to the M4, and with refurbished permanent stables, two huge main arenas and several smaller grass and all-weather arenas alongside it provided a fantastic facility that we all enjoyed. As well as the main restaurant there were two mobile catering units in the stable area which was a real bonus and a thoughtful addition. I make no apologies for a lengthy report as many members will not have been able to attend the show on the day and we wanted to share as much information as possible with everyone.

In order to offer a full range of classes, the schedule included classes for open, novice, amateur, home produced, show, working hunter, sport horses and pure and part-bred Irish Draft including HOYS qualifiers for both ridden and in-hand.

As ever the amateur classes are popular and they started with a win for Mrs Jones’ Wentworth, receiving the Hannah Wain Memorial Cup, with two of our Cornish supporters in 2nd and 3^rd with Annette Buckingham on Lawson IV {My Eclipse} and Lauren Beerridge with Sct Le Bijou De Reve respectively. Two of the seasons most consistent campaigners topped the Amateur Lightweights with Camilla Stowell-Davies on her own Glenkeeran Dance in the Deep {Crosstown Dancer x Glenkeeran In The Deep} taking the nod over Seabourne Silent Valley {Mourne Mountains x Seabourne Dark Pearl {Loch Pearl}} and Francoise Babbington. These two went on to take the Championship and the Reserve. Rebecca Summons rode her own Oneida Patch {Corravale x Roma Lass} to win the Amateur Middleweights and Claudine O’Connor led the heavyweights with Vision Impossible {Classic Vision x Red Moll}. The Amateur Ridden R.I.S.H. classes were very kindly sponsored by Mrs. Ruth Flack.

The Horse of the Year Show qualifying classes kindly sponsored at the finals by Catplant Group of Companies Ltd always attract a good entry. The Small Hunter class was won by Miss E Just’s Wall Street II {Ol Metta x Johns Porter {{Porter Rhodes}} ridden by Jayne Ross. In the Lightweight section saw Oliver Hood with Mrs. J Moorhouse’s Timpany Imperial, by the popular Irish TB stallion Emperor Augustus, take the top slot over Jayne Ross and Mrs. K Campbell’s Temple Ogue {Verdi x Furisto Diamond Lady} in 2^nd. The Horse of The year Show Middleweights saw 1^st and 2^nd places taken by two from the Bloomfield stable. Bloomfield Eloquence {Watermill Swatch x Gurraun Broadway} ridden by Alice Homer stood top. Second place went to Bloomfield Greystones {Crosstown Dancer x Bloomfield Rebekah} for Mrs.S.Powell ridden by Lucinda Martin. The winner from the Amateur class, Rebecca Summons with Oneida Patch, stood a very creditable 3^rd. In the Heavyweights Danielle Heath piloted Miss.V. and Miss. G. Lovick’s Isle Bright {Aveia x Bright Magic} to the top of the line with Amateur Heavyweight winner Vision Impossible in 2^nd. The Horse of The Year Show Ladies Side-saddle horse class was won by the consistent Caledonia, owned and ridden by Penny Clarke with Ellie Brassey on her Sparco {Parco x Count On Me} in 2^nd. The overall Championship was awarded to Timpany Imperial ridden by Oliver Hood with Reserve going to Jayne Ross and the 15.2 winner Wall Street II. Timpany Imperial is bred by David Lyons and Ms P Howard and had a very successful in hand career when owned and produced by Ann Drabble.

The ridden mare class was poorly supported but none the less won by the beautiful Fair Dinkum {Roma Diamond Skip x Tattygare My Fair Lady}. Owned by Mrs A Wilkes and ridden by Nicola Wilkes Fair Dinkum was bred by one of SHBGB greatest supporters, the late Val Scouller who owned some lovely mares and bred some top show stock. They received the Eoeneve Trophy given in memory of the beautiful ridden hunter mare formerly shown by David Tatlow.

The Ladies Hunter Class, sponsored by Mr and Mrs M Jerram, is the epitome of the elegance of yesteryear. The winner here was the Watermill Swatch sired Bloomfield Eloquence, also the winner of the HOYS Middleweight Hunter class, beautifully ridden again by Alice Homer. Second place went to the beautiful brown gelding bred by Mr M Maryan, Seabourne Silent Valley.

The ever-popular Working Hunter classes, sponsored by Mrs P Cooper, started with the Novice class and saw a win for Working Hunter queen Mel Hennah and her own AS Finstere {L’Arc De Triomphe Z x Norma Mail} with Mr and Mrs Whitney’s Thanks A Billion {Killea Hill View x Diamond Lodge Flyer} ridden by Helen Newbold. The Amateur class went to Camilla Southerington and her own Greenacres Chacco Charlie {Chacco Blue x Chantal B}. The restricted Working Hunter saw a win for the 2^nd placed from the Novice class, Thanks A Billion ridden by Helen Newbold. Second was Nelly Newton {Donder x Jemima}, owned, and bred by Mrs. K. Parsons and ridden by K Wilson. The winner of the Lightweight Working Hunter, and Horse Of The Year Show Working Hunter Champion, and winner of the Mister Perkins Perpetual Challenge Cup, saw the first of two HOYS tickets for Mr. D Barton. His Working Hunter winner was Evola W {Namelus R x Laravola} ably ridden by Kieran Baslington. Second in the class went to the cleverly named Wyworrie owned by Mrs. V Rose and ridden by Ginny Rose. Winer of the Heavyweight section, and reserve Champion was won by ABC Little Rock {Vdl Arkansas x Rubi Tuesday} another owned by Mrs. V. Rose and ridden by Ginny Rose. Second Heavyweight went to Greenacres Chacco Charlie. ABC Little Rock also won the Rory Gilsenan Grand Prix and went home with the lovely Rory Gilsenan Trophy given by his family in his memory.

The Amateur Home Produced is a very popular addition to our schedule over the past few years and this year saw a win for Maximum F X {Monte Carlo x King’s Serenity} ridden by Joanna Levett for owner Mrs. S. Gilbert. Second place went to SCT Le Bijou De Reve and 3^rd to Amanda Benson’s Ballingeary Buster. This class is very kindly sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hobbs.

The class for ridden four-year-olds is always a favourite with many looking to see the new graduates into the ridden classes. A win here for Jill Day’s Greenhall Commander {Island Commander x Greenhall Diamond Lady} ridden by Robert Walker (below). Second and third placings went to Mrs. D Teirney’s Bloomfield Distinction {O.B.O.S Quality x Glidawn Delight} and Bloomfield President {Emporer Augustus x Bloomfield Rebekah} respectively.

Again, the Novice classes provide a show case for ‘new faces’ and the Lightweight class saw a win for Ellie Brassey and her own Sparco {Parco x Count On Me} with Jill Day’s Elusive Gold {Elusive Emir x Cloughanover Flight} taking the heavyweight class with Brett McKinnon’s Langaller Chick Flick {Langaller Starring Role x Big Bird} in second. Champion went to Elusive Gold.

The British Bred four- and five-year-old Championship was very generously sponsored by Debbie Harrod and Polly Coles. Here the winner of the four-year-olds went to Bloomfield Distraction with Jill Day’s Greenhall Commander in second. The section for the five-year-olds went to Greenhall Treasure Island with Daphne Thornycroft’s Tigbourne taking second place.

Camilla Stowell-Davies (pictured at the top) headed home with an incredible haul of silverware having won the Mickey Springfield Trophy {Given by The Gibson Family} for the Amateur Championship, The Princes’ Grace Trophy and the Robert Oliver Challenge Trophy for the Supreme Ridden Champion. Very many congratulations.

What the in-hand section lacked in numbers it more than made up for in quality. As predominately a breeding society we endeavour to offer a full range of classes for broodmares and youngstock. As always, this section started with the broodmares and the winning Lightweight mare was My Lovely Ava {Aveia x My Something Special}. Her foal by Langaller Starring Role also won her class. The Heavyweight mare class was won by Naomi Bradwell’s Tawnmore Bi Bi {Grange Bouncer x Spring Morning} with Doreen Hoare’s young mare Franks Moonlight in second place and Mr D Walker and Mr N Davies Plas Pennant Demelza {Aye Aye Skipper x Dame De Flandres} in 3^rd. Demelsa’s colt foal by the Thoroughbred stallion Ansiei took the foal class. Mrs. A Lamb’s small hunter mare Littledale Lush {Roma Diamond Skip x Littledale Finalist} won the 15.2 mare class and her foal by Littledale Bright Star also won her class. The Broodmare Championship and the winner of the HIS Champion Challenge Cup went to the Heavyweight Tawnmore Bi Bi with the winning Heavyweight foal winning the foal Championship and both the Kadir Trophy and the Summer Knight Perpetual Challenge Cup.

The Small Hunter Youngstock section was kindly sponsored by The Cross Lane Farm/Etheridge Farm and Stud. The yearling gelding Comberton Upbeat {Utopia x Comberton Callula} won and stood reserve Champion for his owners Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs. Winner of the 3-year-olds and Champion was Barnswood Proposition {Primitive Proposal x Hollyhill Golden Girl} owned and bred by Mrs. D. Hoare and shown by Tony Wareham.

The open Hunter Youngstock yearling colt was won by Ms R. Hamar’s Houdini {Escape Z x Hokey Cokey} and filly by Mr. R. Hanson’s pure-bred Irish Draught Ardtrea II {Aye Aye Skipper x Roscrib Rosie}. The 2-year-old colt was topped by Don Barton’s Langaller Cambridge Don {Sandy’s Light x Chantry Clover Girl} with Plas Pennant Sir Sidney {Siren’s Missile x Dame De Flandres} in second, owned by Mr and Mrs Bowdler. The 3-year-old hunter gelding was won by Regina Daly with her Tell Me Another, bred by Cathy Wood and Margaret Boyles and shown by Steve Pitt. Three-year-old filly class was won by Ms. Rosita Hamar with her home-bred Partita {Amazing Jigsaw x Tarot} with Kelly Weaver’s Kelann before Bedtime {Aviea x Elmhurst Mosiac Rose} in second. The Male Champion and overall In-Hand Champion went to Tell Me Another (below) with Langaller Cambridge Don in Reserve for both titles. Female Champion was Partita with Ardtrea II in reserve.

In the Sports Horse Breeding sector, again the quality rose to the top. The winning Broodmare under 16h went to Mr. Stephen Davey and his homebred Trenavey Euphinia {Sea Heir x Euphoria II} with her foal by Woodvean Midnight Blue also taking the foal class. Brood mare over 16h and Overall Sport Horse Champion came from the Future Stud with Future Illicit Opposition {Fleetwater Opposition x Future Illicit Affair} below. Second was Ann Bassett’s My Lovely Ava. Ava’s filly foal by Langaller Starring Role won the open foal class and took the overall Sport Horse Foal Championship. Open yearling winner was Nicola’s Bentley-Lovell’s Anglo-Arab Primitive Alpine {Primitive Proposal x Viola Des Alps} and Mr. and Mrs. Bowdler’s Plas Pennant Sir Sidney topping the 2-year-olds. Top 3-year-old was another winner for Ann Bassett with Kalani K {Royaldik x Caylinn} bred by Miss Lortal. Doreen Hoare’s Barnswood Proposition took the second place.

The popular addition of pure and part-bred Irish Draught breeding classes a few years back saw a well filled class before judge Mark Fitton. The winner of the 4 years old and over class went to Doreen Hoare’s Franks Moonflower {Gortfree Hero x Gleneven Star Light}. The youngstock class here was won by Don Barton’s Langaller Oxford Don {Sandy’s Light x Chantry Clover Girl} with Mrs. Walton’s homebred Cosette’s Prospect {Averti Amorous Archie} in second. Langaller Oxford Don then stood section Champion and Franks Moonflower reserve.

The final championship was the overall In Hand Supreme which also carried the Price Family HOYS qualification ticket. The winner was Don Barton’s Langaller Oxford Don (below) giving Mr. Barton his second qualification of the show, with Reserve going to Tell Me Another.

This brought the two-day show to a close.  We wish to thank all those who attended and supported us throughout. It was lovely to see so many there, so much laughter and fun, everyone in good spirits and obviously enjoying being back to as near normal as we can expect at the moment. A huge ‘Thank you’ to Catherine Burdock and the SHBGB working group for undertaking the planning, organisation and prepariation of the show, to all of the stewards who willingly, on the whole, gave up their time, to the commentators, to our hosts the Broome family, to the judges, many of whom spent many hours officiating, to those working on the administration on the day. And lastly to our many generous sponsors without who we simply wouldn’t be able to run the show. With their support the show was a huge success both in the quality of exhibits, the chance to offer fantastic remuneration to the winners and financially our society.
